Blog-Power Runs Deep

Despite the Penguins falling in Game 1 to the Red Wings, blog-power could be felt a little deeper in the league yesterday, and again affected the Penguins’ franchise, as well as the heart of blog-power in Chicago.  The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh Penguins AHL affiliate, staged a dramatic Conference Final series comeback to defeat the Portland Pirates in 7 games.  Down 3-2 in the series, they won Game 6 on Friday coming back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 in OT, then clinched the deciding Game 7 last night, scoring with 30 seconds left in the game for a 3-2 win.  Out in the west, Friday night also saw the Chicago Wolves book their place in the Calder Cup Final, defeating the Toronto Marlies.

It is quite an achievement for both an NHL team and their AHL affiliates to reach the Cup FInal in the same year, so congrats to the Penguins organization.  They now face a Chicago team that not only is a pure joy to watch, but also is coached by one of the best minor league coaches in the system, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the NHL before the start of the next season.  The Wolves are not affiliated with the Blackhawks, that would obviously make too much sense, but are actually the farm team of the Atlanta Thrashers.  The Blackhawks AHL affiliate lives up in Rockford, IL.

But for those of you living in Chicago, do yourself a favour, and try to get down to a game to cheer on your home-team minor leaguers.  AHL hockey is a LOT of fun, you feel much more ‘a part’ of the action, and you’ll be watching a number of future NHL’ers show what they’re made of.  The Finals begin this Thursday in Chicago at the Allstate Arena:

Game 1 – Thu., May 29 – W-B/Scranton at Chicago, 7:00 CT
Game 2 – Sun., June 1 – W-B/Scranton at Chicago, 3:00 CT
Game 3 – Wed., June 4 – Chicago at W-B/Scranton, 7:05 ET
Game 4 – Fri., June 6 – Chicago at W-B/Scranton, 7:05 ET
*Game 5 – Sat., June 7 – Chicago at W-B/Scranton, 7:05 ET
*Game 6 – Tue., June 10 – W-B/Scranton at Chicago, 6:00 CT
*Game 7 – Thu., June 12 – W-B/Scranton at Chicago, 6:00 CT
* if necessary

  1. My my, that sweet potato looks nice up there.

  2. It appears Daisy decided to respond while logged in as me. Not that I think the sweet potato fails to look nice. Its really more a matter of that not being a comment I would generally make.

  3. That’s a relief, Enabler. I really thought Daisy had got to you with her excessive vegetable chatter. Although I guess I only have myself to blame when my blog banner is full of vegetables walking the streets, driving their pickle jars, and the like.

    And yet another blog post degenerates into comments about vegetables.

    (But do go catch a Wolves game. Um. Wolves like vegetables. Yep.)
